Community Law Advocacy
The Community Law Advocacy program provides free legal information, advocacy, and representation to low-income people in the community. Although advocates are not lawyers, they may be able to help resolve the legal issue or make an effective referral to a lawyer who can. This program is funded by the Law Foundation of BC.
This program's scope of service includes the following:
•Tenancy issues: RTA and non-RTA issues including mobile homes, Eviction Notices, repair requests, damage deposit returns and more;
• Disability Decision Reconsiderations or Appeals: PWD and CPPD decisions among others
• Indigenous law issues including Indian status applications, health benefits, housing, and income security;
• Employment law: EI, ESB; employment standards dispute
• Debt and consumer law;
• Human Rights Complaints;
• Civil Resolution Tribunal (CRT) assistance on co-op, non-RTA housing, and small claims.
The Community Law Advocacy program also organizes regular Public Legal Education Workshops where the public is invited to learn from legal professionals and share a free meal. Events and general legal information can be found on the Poverty Law Advocacy Facebook page.
