Recreating the Village

Recreating the Village – Program Overview
Wachiay Friendship Centre | Courtenay, BC

Recreating the Village is a community-rooted program offered through the Wachiay Friendship Centre that supports Indigenous families in reconnecting with their cultural strengths, nurturing secure parent-child relationships, and building a strong sense of belonging.

Our mission is to walk alongside families as they reclaim parenting knowledge rooted in love, safety, and interdependence. We recognize that healing and growth happen in relationship—with our children, our culture, and our community.

At the heart of the program is the 8-week Circle of Security Parenting (COSP) course. This evidence-based approach helps caregivers understand and strengthen the bonds between themselves and their children, creating a foundation for emotional security and resilience.

Following the COSP course, families are invited to participate in a 3-day cultural camp, co-hosted with Indigenous Education at School District 71. This land-based gathering provides space for cultural teachings, connection, and ceremony.

To continue nurturing community connection and cultural identity, we host monthly family gatherings. These events include shared meals, teachings from Knowledge Keepers and Elders, and hands-on cultural activities such as drum or rattle making, storytelling, cedar weaving, and family games. Families are supported by a circle of caring staff and other Wachiay program coordinators, ensuring a welcoming and culturally safe space for all generations.

We believe that by coming together in community, we strengthen the sacred roles of caregivers and help children grow with roots in culture, love, and belonging.
