Wachiay Friendship Centre Society located in Courtenay, British Columbia is currently building a new Aboriginal Head Start Daycare centre scheduled to open in July 2019. We are seeking qualified staff with experience working in an early childhood education environment.


Our program will include an Infant and Toddler program licensed for 8 children and a 3 – 5 year Program licensed for 22 children.  We need qualified Early Childhood Educators with Infant and Toddler and Special Needs certification and Indigenous Cultural Educators to join our Early Years Team.

  • Early Childhood Education Certificate

  • Infant Toddler Educator Certification

  • Special Needs Educator Certification recommended

  • Criminal Record Review successfully completed.

  • Immunization record required.

  • Valid Food Safety Certificate.

  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certificate.

  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License required.

  • Essential computer operations & software skills required.

  • Prefer two years minimum directly related experience working with & supervising children, delivering structured curriculum & classes, care and supervision including children with Canadian Aboriginal ancestry.

  • Pursuant to Section 41 of the BC Human Rights Code, preference may be given to applicants with Canadian born Aboriginal ancestry.



  • The daycare will operate Monday to Friday 7:30 AM – 5:30 PM daily with staggered shifts to provide required staffing coverage for children.



  • All positions are fulltime employment 7.5 hour shifts Monday to Friday with 1 hour for lunch daily.

  • Wages for all positions are $53,625 annually including MERC’s which equates to $25 per hour not including MERC’s.

  • Annual vacation entitlement starts at 15 work days per year.

A non-profit organization located in the Comox Valley is seeking applications for the position of Director of Finance. Salary range is commensurate with education, practical training and experience. This is a full-time position working 35 hours per week. You will be an integral member of an innovative management team.

The ideal candidate will possess a related degree in accounting, and a minimum of ten years’ experience in the full-cycle bookkeeping and audit preparation, as well as at least five years’ experience in upper-level financial management of a non-profit society with multiple departments, sources of revenue, bank accounts and funding agreements. Experience is also required to complete full-cycle bookkeeping for a small, for-profit subsidiary.

General Duties and Requirements:

  • Record financial transactions utilizing established chart of accounts;

  • Maintain general ledger by verifying, allocating and posting transactions using QuickBooks Desktop with Payroll accounting software;

  • Secure financial information by completing daily/weekly data backups;

  • Maintain confidentiality of all financial and other information;

  • Reconcile monthly all Balance Sheet type accounts, including bank and credit card accounts;

  • Maintain records by filing contracts, reports, correspondence, etc.;

  • Prepare monthly financial reports by collecting, analyzing and summarizing account information and trends by the tenth day of each new month;

  • Develop written protocols as required to maintain efficiency, effectiveness and economy;

  • Maintain accounting controls by adhering to all policies and procedures, and complying with federal and provincial law;

  • Understand deferred revenue and government fiscal years;

  • Understand non-profit and for profit accounting practices;

  • Ability to deal directly with government and philanthropic funders concerning financial reporting;

  • Understand inter-program and inter-company transactions;

  • Familiarity with Gaming Account Summary Reporting and management of BC Gaming funds;

  • Ensure department expenses do not exceed department revenue;

  • Prepare annual budgets for all programs based on contractual requirements, and assist program managers monthly to ensure actual expenditures remain in budget;

  • Understand charity specific GST capture and reporting;

  • Ability to fully utilize accounting software for reports, budgeting, payroll, bank and credit card account reconciliations, journal entries, departmental revenue and expense recognition, accounts payable and receivable, etc.

  • Thorough and up-to-date comprehension of accounting practices and principles, and IFRS and GAAP standards


  • Administer bi-weekly payroll by collecting, calculating and entering data;

  • Process electronic payroll deposits and / or issue pay cheques;

  • Familiarity with issuing personnel multiple paycheques from different funding sources and budgets;

  • Maintain monthly / annual employee payroll spreadsheet based on wage rate and 1820 hours;

  • Prepare payroll source deductions remittances within specified time limits from two separate bank accounts.

  • Report and remit quarterly WorkSafeBC premiums broken down by program

Manage Multiple Departments:

  • Enter department revenue and expenditures utilizing QuickBooks Desktop

  • Produce monthly departmental Profit & Loss statements by class/department, analyze data, report and submit recommendations;

  • Appropriate departmentalization of Balance Sheet accounts;

  • Work with program managers to maintain Budget v. Actual spreadsheets for each program department through each fiscal year, to assist in program delivery planning;

  • Monitor and analyze program expenditures, report anomalies, make recommendations.

Manage Multiple Bank Accounts:

  • Maintain financial records for one non-profit society with approximately 35 departments annually, one for-profit company, and Gaming funds received from the Province of BC’s Gaming Commission;

  • Receive, process and deposit cheques and cash for all bank accounts;

  • Process bills and bill payments by cheque from appropriate bank account;

  • Ability to allocate payments to more than one department without creating separate transactions;
